🎨 Wireframing for all
Hello! Adam Thornhill here. ‘The Podcast Guy’ saving you 10 hours a week.

Today, we’ll dive into the best insights and ideas from The SaaS Podcast.
Wireframing should be a team sport. Historically, it has been the exclusive domain of designers and product managers. However, its true value lies not in who wields this tool, but in when and how it's used. Wireframing is a powerful way to visualize and convey ideas, and it should be a shared language among all team members, from founders to engineers.
Saying no to Figma
When designers use Figma, they get fixated on what your product looks like and how it works. If they do that too soon, they lose sight of the problem you're solving and who you're building for. I'd prefer somebody to create wireframes on a whiteboard or a sketch, rather than Figma.

Removing restrictions
Don't think about wireframes as a deliverable. Think of them as a tool to help you flesh out and articulate your ideas. A picture can be a better way to communicate than words, so founders shouldn't feel like they're not allowed to draw a picture. Designers should be comfortable receiving wireframes and be able to have a conversation around them without feeling like this is the final product.

Fat marker sketches
Fat marker sketches are a great way to avoid thinking about layout. You can use your sketches as a reference point when discussing how to best solve a problem. This is a very simple and easy way for someone who isn't a designer to communicate or articulate something that's in their head.

Why it matters
Low-fidelity wireframes allow you to quickly and easily discuss ideas. They change the conversation from design details to solving user needs, they allow for early-stage experimentation, and they prevent costly mistakes in the future. It's significantly easier and cheaper to discard a wireframe sketch than to pivot an entire product.
Next steps
Encourage wireframing for all. Make it clear that wireframing isn't only for designers - it's a tool all team members can use to articulate their ideas.
Provide training. Offer simple training sessions on how to create effective wireframes, emphasizing the focus on user journeys and problem-solving over detailed design.
Foster a safe environment. Cultivate an environment where all team members feel comfortable presenting and discussing their wireframes, regardless of their artistic abilities or design expertise.
Review and iterate. Regularly review and discuss wireframes as a team to encourage collective brainstorming and iteration.
