Today, you’ll learn about AI principles thanks to Unsolicited Feedback.
I bet you don’t have a set of AI principles - clear guidelines to focus your team and align AI with your company values. Learn from Ben Kus as he explains how Box uses its AI principles to adapt its product approach to better serve its customers.
How Box approaches AI
We have AI principles that describe how we're going to handle AI.
This is different from the way we normally do things at Box.
For example, if we have a new feature, we usually release it to our customers and say ‘Here you go’ and then we release it to the users and they get a chance to try it.
This is just like any other SaaS company. The new feature is a benefit. Everybody gets to use it.
In the case of AI, one of our principles is customers fully control their content.
When we release an AI feature, we suggest enterprise admins enable it for their users and we give them a chance to try it first.
We don't just enable it for all users because enterprise customers first want clarity on how it works, hallucinations, future regulations, what training we provide, how we audit it, etc.
If they're not comfortable with all of that, then they will just stop using Box.

Why it matters
Rushing AI implementation without a clear set of principles can lead to unintended consequences, from data privacy issues to user mistrust.
Case in point: At Medicspot we decided against using HeyGen for medical content on our website. We believe healthcare is built on trust, and using AI to replicate a doctor’s name and likeness could negatively affect how we’re perceived to deliver care.
We’re lucky though. We didn’t make this decision because we adhered to a set of AI principles. We did this because a member of our team spoke up and raised this concern. Without AI principles or an open culture, we could have used HeyGen and negatively impacted patient trust.
Hopefully, this story reinforces the importance of establishing your own AI principles to ensure AI is used and deployed responsibly in your company.
Next steps
Here’s how you can define and codify your own AI principles:
Identify your core values. Start by outlining your company’s core values and how AI aligns with them.
Engage stakeholders. Solicit insights from your customers and employees to help shape your AI principles.
Draft AI principles. Create a draft of your AI principles that addresses ethical considerations, data security, and compliance with regulations. Ensure they are clear and actionable.
Review and refine. Get feedback on your principles from your leadership team and make adjustments.
Educate and train. Provide training and resources to your team and customers to ensure they understand and can effectively implement your AI principles.
