It's not what you know, it's who you know. Or, maybe it's both? Shaan Puri suggests a different approach: networking up. By surrounding yourself with people who are further ahead in their journey, you can accelerate your learning and achieve your goals more quickly.
Surround yourself with successful people
I have a strategy to help me learn faster when I venture into something new. I surround myself with other people who are playing the same game but are one to two levels above me. They're either better at it than I am or they're further along in their journey. I used this hack in two areas:
1. Twitter growth. We wanted to grow big on Twitter. Both of us had a similar idea to create a a text message group called the 100K club. We invited six people who shared this goal and discussed strategies to achieve it. Then, we all became friends. This immersion helped me grow rapidly.
2. E-commerce business. I was running an e-commerce business part-time and was new to the field. I created Club LTV, a curated group of successful e-commerce owners. I learned a bunch of shit that contributed to my own success. I didn't charge people because my goal was to acquire knowledge and expand my network, which is exactly what happened.

Why it matters
Traditional networking often involves connecting with peers or those at a similar stage in their career. While this has its benefits, it may not provide the learning opportunities that come with networking up.
The quickest way to learn is by understanding what has worked and what hasn't from people who have recently 'been there, done that'. Being a part of a group with a shared goal also increases your accountability, ensuring you follow through on your commitments.
Next steps
Identify your goals. Define what you want to achieve. This helps you identify the right people to network with.
Research people. Utilize LinkedIn or Twitter to find individuals or groups that align with your goals.
Reach out. Don't hesitate to initiate conversations. Whether it's a simple DM or an email, make the first move.
Create or join a group. Like Shaan's 100K Club or Club LTV, create or join a group that aligns with your goals.
Give to get. The more you share your successes and failures, the more others will reciprocate; potentially opening doors for you that might have otherwise remained closed.
