❎ Seek To Be Wrong
Hello! Adam Thornhill here. ‘The Podcast Guy’ saving you 10 hours a week.
Enjoy the 135th Podup, with special thanks to RhinoRating.
Today, we’ll dive into the best insights and ideas from Lenny’s Podcast.
Seek to be wrong, not right. This mantra flips conventional product management on its head. It's a call to challenge your assumptions, pick holes in your ideas, and find the best solution.
Don’t focus on validation
One of my big mantras is ‘We don’t validate, we falsify.’ We look to be wrong.
Use this mindset when you’re approaching insights and research. You should want your research to show you how and why you’re wrong so you can fix it quickly.
Many PMs are not in this place. They don’t want to be wrong. They look to validate.

Why it matters
By seeking to be wrong, we open ourselves up to new perspectives. This applies even more so to leaders and founders. We often forget how overwhelming it feels to contradict and challenge your boss.
If you consistently ask for reasons why something won’t work, your team will become more comfortable giving you constructive feedback, arguing the other side, and sharing new, innovative ideas.
Next steps
Start by steel-manning. When conducting customer research or asking colleagues for feedback, always try to disprove your own assumptions.
Be impartial. Objectively assess feedback as if the project belongs to someone else, looking for both support and contradictions to your hypothesis.
Foster open communication. Encourage an environment where sharing diverse opinions and ideas is the norm.
