It's too easy to lose sight of what's important. Flash Tags, a concept started by HubSpot co-founder Dharmesh Shah, offer a structured approach to both giving and receiving feedback, ensuring the most critical insights get prioritized.
What are Flash Tags?
We've all been in a situation where someone gives you feedback and you under interpret it or over interpret it.
Dharmesh has a ritual to help you calibrate how much attention you should give each piece of feedback.
It breaks down the 4 ways of giving feedback using the 'Is this a hill I'm going to die on?' metaphor:
FYI. There's no hill in sight. This is a thought I have, feel free to take it or leave it.
Suggestion. There's a hill but I'm not going to die on it. This is what I'd do if I were you.
Recommendation. I'm climbing the hill. I've thought about this a lot so don't ignore this.
Plea. It's rarely used. This is a pretty good candidate for a hill I'm going to die on, so trust me.

How to use Flash Tags
You create a feedback table and write your feedback in it. Then there's a select list and you can select between those 4 options. It helps people question how strongly they feel about something before sharing feedback.

Why it matters
Handling feedback can be messy. Without a clear system, both critical and trivial advice receive the same attention. Also, there's not a shared language to contextualize people's thoughts. This may cause the recipient to feel self-doubt, panic, and stress.
This is where Flash Tags come in handy. They help point out what's most important. This organized approach stops the flood of too much feedback and makes dealing with advice clearer, simpler, and faster for everyone involved.
Next steps
Implement Flash Tags. Introduce the concept to your team and train them on the importance of a shared language for feedback.
Facilitate adoption. Create a feedback table and develop a system where feedback is documented along with its corresponding Flash Tag.
Prioritize feedback. Schedule time to review, prioritize, and action pieces of feedback tagged as 'Plea' or 'Recommendation'.
Evaluate ritual effectiveness. After a few months, assess the impact of Flash Tags on your feedback process and make adjustments as necessary.
Train new team members. Train new hires on your feedback ritual and reinforce the importance of honest, clear, and respectful feedback.
