đ Gifting made easy
Hello! Adam Thornhill here. âThe Podcast Guyâ saving you 10 hours a week.
Enjoy the 87th Podup with the best bits from Builder Banter.
Remember the recent MFM episode about hiring a Chief Automation Officer? Sam Parr said this:
At Hampton, the first hire we made was an automation expert. His name's Grant. All he does is automate stuff. He's a Zapier and Airtable expert.
Today, we get to hear from Grant himself. He opened up to Jakob Greenfeld about providing an extraordinary sales and onboarding experience using automated gifting.
Automate your onboarding
Our onboarding flow is built with Zapier and HubSpot workflows and automations. When someone joins, we send them an email with a link to a Typeform to confirm their mailing address, shirt size, and birthday, in case we want to send them a present in the future.
We then automatically send them a welcome box of Hampton gear using SwagUp. SwagUp has a Zapier API where you can add a new customer, send them a swag box, and get notified when youâre low on inventory.

Send gifts on special occasions
If someone on our team realizes a member has just had a baby, they can check a box on Airtable and that will send the member a baby onesie. Weâre trying to surprise and delight our members and make it a high value, happy experience.
Another example of this is Brex. They sent a bottle of champagne to all these startups that had just raised a round of funding. Their conversion from sending a bottle of champagne to a demo was 75%, then demo to close was 75% again. When you tie gifting to an occasion, you get great results.

Why it matters
Automation isnât just about efficiency; itâs also about enhancing personalization and creating memorable experiences. By automating the onboarding flow and gifting process, you can wow your customers and capitalize on the rule of reciprocity.
I can personally vouch for this strategyâs effectiveness. When I had my first child, I was a client of Yext. They sent me a Yext branded baby grow a few days after hearing Oliver was born. It was a touching moment that engendered a newfound sense of trust and loyalty.
Next steps
Interested in starting an automated gifting process? Consider these steps:
Identify key moments. Determine the occasions where a gift would have the most impact. Birthdays, promotions, or personal milestones are a good start.
Choose your tools. Select automation tools that integrate with your current system, such as Zapier and SwagUp.
Customize your gifts. Tailor your gifts to your team or customer preferences. This could be company swag, custom items, or something relevant to a recent achievement.
Set up automation triggers. Use your chosen tool to set up the automation process. This might involve sending an email or triggering a gift dispatch upon hitting a certain milestone.
Monitor and tweak. Keep an eye on how your automated gifting is received. Adjust the timing, type of gift, or trigger event based on feedback.
