In order to be a good leader, you first need to take care of yourself. Greg Larson, SVP of Engineering at Divvy, explains why you should secure your own emotional well-being before tending to the needs of others. By exploring this concept, we can establish sustainable leadership habits that benefit both ourselves and our colleagues.
Help yourself before helping others
My wife’s a mental health therapist. She says before you can give other people love, you need to make sure your love bucket is full first.
You have to be in a good place as a leader before you can take care of your team. People see it.
When you’re in meetings or working with people, is your excitement and passion infectious and helping people feel the same way?
What I try to do is take a deliberate step back. I carve out time for myself.
It helps you to break out of the problems you’re dealing with, recharge the batteries, and be a better leader for everyone else too.

Why it matters
When you prioritize self-care, you can rediscover an enthusiasm and passion that’s contagious. It’s vital to set aside time for reflection so you can look at things differently. This gives you the space to think big picture, adjust your direction, or even pivot if necessary.
Next steps
My favorite self-care technique is to turn as many meetings as possible into walking meetings. I have a 3 year old and 1 year old, so efficiency is everything to me. This habit helps you to:
Utilize ‘dead time’. The 5-10 minutes before a meeting is often unproductive.
Maintain your fitness. A healthy body helps with a healthy mind.
Free your imagination. Walks can be the equivalent of shower thoughts.
Listen to podcasts. I use this time to listen to podcasts on your behalf!
TL;DR It’s easy to sit in a chair all day and let the world pass you by. You tell yourself that if you’re not staring at your laptop then you’re not working. That’s a lie. Self-care and clear thinking is just a different kind of working.
