Short form videos are taking over the world. Theyâre not just restricted to TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts. Youâll notice they dominate every social platform, from LinkedIn to Twitter. So, itâs about time I covered how to create viral short form videos for your business.
Criteria for a great video idea
There are four criteria for a great video idea:
Novelty
Uncertainty
Knowledge Gaps
Complexity
Novelty is giving the viewer an intriguing angle, making it unique and interesting to watch.
Uncertainty is telling the viewer that you're doing something crazy and they don't know what the outcome could possibly be.
Knowledge Gaps is telling the viewer, âI know something that you don't, which is why you have to watch.â
Complexity is giving the viewer additional layers so they have more reasons to watch.

Youâve got your viral video idea. Now what?
How to hook viewers
Power words should be the first thing that start your video.
Power words are things that will instantly hook people, such as free, zero dollars, stole, or any other crazy word.
I say this because I see a lot of people starting their videos with âThis isâ. But it's not telling me anything about the video. I continue scrolling.
Compare this with someone saying, âFree chicken sandwiches all weekend.â If I hear that I'm in. I think âWhere are these free chicken sandwiches?â

Great work! People are watching. But, how do you make them come back for more?
The peak end theory
There's a theory called the peak end theory. You dictate the majority of your emotions, feelings, and opinions towards something based on the ending.
Just like when you watch a movie, you can be bored for the whole thing and then find the last 30 minutes really good.
So that's why we want the endings to feel intense emotion.
Close your videos off with either a strong wholesomeness or the funniest moment in the entire video.
A lot of the time we like to do twists because they'll have great rewatchability.

Why it matters
By harnessing short form video, you can significantly enhance your brand visibility and engagement.
Just look at Ryanair and Duolingo. Ryanairâs humorous and relatable videos, like this one, have amassed millions of views, leaning into their no-frills budget airline status.
Similarly, Duolingo uses playful, quirky videos, itâs surprising life sized owl, and trending songs to attract a younger audience, like this Instagram Reels.
If you can master the elements that make a video compelling, memorable, and shareable, you can capture and retain your audience's attention, ultimately driving more traffic and conversions for your business.
Next steps
Write down your goals. Be explicit about why youâre creating short form videos: to build an audience, to acquire customers, or to increase conversion.
Create great video ideas. Ensure your video has at least one of the four criteria: Novelty, Uncertainty, Knowledge Gaps, and Complexity.
Hook viewers immediately. Start your videos with power words. Avoid generic openings like âThis isâ. Instead, set up the conflict and hint at the resolution.
Perfect the ending. Utilize the peak end theory by closing your videos with strong, emotional moments, like a twist, a punchline, or a wholesome ending.
Plan for the worst. Video can be a hits game. Remember the Pareto principle, 80% of your success will come from 20% of your videos.
